Respect the Mountains organizes in cooperation with main sponsor KEEN Footwear the third edition of the EnviroTrek Clean Up Series. These will take place at six fantastic locations in Europe.

What is an Envirotrek? An Envirotrek is an adventure outdoor event where, aside from an the opportunity to try an outdoor activity, the participant will give back to the environment. Both locals and tourists alike can join in the fun!

Maximum participants: 80
09.30: Gathering and start Clean-Up;
12.30: BBQ Lunch;
13.30: Outdoor activities: Either rock climbing, raft building or mountain biking;
16.00: Goodbye + Goodie bag

RespectTheMountains.com for the second year running is undertaking a grassroots initiative series called Envirotrek in co operation with Keen Footwear EU.

An Envirotrek is a collaborative event bringing together public, interest groups and local businesses who are interested in contributing at a grassroots level towards sustainable mountain tourism. There are estimated to be a 100 million visitors in the European Alps each year which presents a huge challenge in maintaining the balance of these mountain environments. There is a growing need to provide necessary awareness campaigns to ensure mountain tourists are aware of the pressures that these popular holiday destinations are under.

120 participants were involved in 2009 collecting more than 300 kilograms of rubbish. With the Series extending into a third country in 2010, Respect the Mountains awareness will reach more mountain tourists and provide essential awareness to a wider tourist audience.

The Format of The Ardennes Envirotrek
Maximum participants: 50
10am: Arrival at Voncken Nature Sport Plus, Chanxhe, Belgium;
10.30: Start clean-up;
12.30pm: Lunch;
1.30 : Outdoor activities: Either rock climbing or raft building;
5 pm: BBQ + Sponsor goodiebag distribution;
6 pm: Depart.

Ardennes Envirotrek Partners

The first edition of the EnviroTrek in Samoëns has been truly great. 70 participants from various countries removed a big pile of trash from the Vallee du Giffre and had an adrenaline rush in the afternoon with rafting, rock climbing and via ferrata.

The day prior to the event the clouds burst. The rainfall and thunderstorms made the EnviroTrek uncertain. The forecast of rain was 50-50%. The day started dry and luckily stayed dry despite the dark clouds.

After an early morning yoga session three groups went out to different section in the Giffre Valley by different means of transport: By foot, by bicycle and bus. Groups were accompanied by walking guides.

The clean up made everybody hungry, so the BBQ lunch was a very much needed break to fuel up for the second round of the day: adventure sports! Rafting on the river Giffre, climbing the sheer cliff near Sixt on the via ferrata circuit and rock climbing up the routes near Gorge du Tines was the perfect reward for bringing back around 200 kilos of trash from the beautiful mountains of the Grand Massif.

“Keep you playground clean!” is het motto. In samenwerking met de lokale VVV’s en AlpAdventures wordt een dag lang in de bergen vertoefd; s’ochtends wordt er onder leiding van een accompagnateur des montagnes een bepaald gebied opgeruimd, vervolgens schuiven we aan voor de BBQ en ‘s middags is het tijd voor vette outdooractie in le Grand Massif! Natuurlijk mag het competitie element niet ontbreken en daarom staat er ook nog een photocontest op het programma met kans op mooie prijzen van onder ander hoofdsponsor KEEN Footwear!

AlpAdventures organiseert een adventure sports week rondom de EnviroTrek van 22 t/m 29 augustus in Samoëns. Voor deelnemers aan deze week is de EnviroTrek GRATIS. Schrijf je snel in voor de Alp adventures week voor een week grensverleggende outdoor actie in de Franse Alpen!

 De eerste EnviroTrek is een feit. 29 juli jl. werd in Mayrhofen door meer dan 40 mensen afval uit de bergen gehaald en diverse outdoor sporten beoefend. En dit alles onder een strak blauwe hemel.

De ochtend stond in het teken van de clean up op verschillende locaties in het Zillertal. De organisatie hiervan was in handen van afvalverwerker ATM. Drie groepen vertrokken in de vroege ochtend naar verschillende plaatsen rondom Mayrhofen om zoveel mogelijk afval mee terug te nemen. De meest bizarre items werden mee teruggenomen. Van een complete set damesschoenen tot sterk verroeste auto-onderdelen. In totaal zijn 12 volle afvalzakken uit de natuur gehaald. Alexander Wuertenberger, verantwoordelijk voor de evenementen van ATM,  geeft aan dat het Zillertal behoorlijk “sauber” is en dat veel mensen rekening houden met de omgeving. Toch kan dat nog beter, gezien de resultaten van de clean up. Dit soort acties laten zien wat er in korte tijd met een groep mensen gedaan kan worden. Dat creeert weer bewustzijn mbt het afvalprobleem in de bergen.

 In de middag, na een heerlijke BBQ op het terras van “basecamp” Gasthof Zillertal, was het tijd voor actie. Raften, klettersteigen en mountainbiken stond op het programma. Voor velen was dit de introductie tot deze outdoorsporten. De gidsen van Mountain Sports Zillertal zorgden ervoor dat de deelnemers veilig konden terugkeren naar basecamp.

The route the participants are doing will (partly) be cleaned from litter. Besides that, the outdoor lovers make an image story that shows the current condition of the mountain environment, the good and the bad. The clean up and image story go along with challenging outdoor sports such as via ferrata, rock climbing, mountain biking and rafting.

The 29^th of July 2009 the very first EnviroTrek takes place in Mayrhofen, Austria. The 26^th of August the base camp of outdoor action is Vallée du Giffre in the French Haute Savoie. The events are co-ordinated by Seasonality in Mayrhofen and AlpAdventures in Samoëns.

 “Create, play and care” are the keywords during the EnviroTrek Clean Up Series. A day packed with creativity, sports and fun in a responsible way. KEEN Footwear and Respect the Mountains dedicate themselves to the care for natural treasures like the Alps, so future generations can enjoy this great mountain range.
